Designing a Mudroom and Laundry That Works for a Busy Family
For busy families, a well-designed mudroom and laundry can be the hardest-working space in the house. It's where school bags, sports gear, wet towels and shoes land, and when it's planned properly it keeps the rest of the home calm and clutter-free.
Plan around how your family actually lives
We start by looking at the daily routine. Where do the kids come in after school? Where does the dog get washed? Where does pool gear dry? The answers shape the layout, storage and finishes, so the space supports real life rather than just looking good in photos.
Storage that's easy to use
Open hooks and cubbies at child height, closed cupboards for cleaning products, a bench seat for putting on shoes and dedicated spots for bags and sports equipment all help. Full-height joinery keeps everything hidden, while a few open sections make it easy for kids to stay organised.
Open-plan mudrooms
Some homes don't have room for a fully enclosed mudroom, and that's where an open-plan mudroom comes in. Designed as part of the entry or hallway, it needs to look as good as it works. Considered joinery, a durable floor finish and a cohesive palette help it feel like an intentional part of the home.
Finishes that can take a beating
Durable floor tiles, wipeable joinery and hard-wearing benchtops are essential. Feature tiles, such as a bamboo or textured tile, can add personality to a laundry while still being practical.
