Kitchen Island Stone: Dolomite vs Marble vs Sintered Stone

The kitchen island is often the centrepiece of the home, and choosing the stone for it is one of the biggest decisions in any kitchen renovation. Dolomite, marble and sintered stone are three of the most popular choices we specify. Here's how they compare.

Marble

Natural marble is timeless and beautifully veined, with a depth that's hard to replicate. It's softer and more porous than other options, so it can etch from acidic foods like lemon juice and wine and needs regular sealing. Many clients embrace the patina that develops over time, but it's worth going in with realistic expectations.

Dolomite

Dolomite sits between marble and quartzite. It offers a similar look to marble, often with soft, elegant veining, but it's generally harder and a little more resistant to wear. It still needs sealing and some care, but it's a great choice for clients who love the look of natural marble and want a bit more durability.

Sintered stone

Sintered stone is an engineered surface made from natural minerals fused under heat and pressure. It's highly resistant to heat, scratches and stains and needs very little maintenance. Modern sintered surfaces can look convincingly like natural stone, and they're well suited to busy family kitchens and outdoor areas.

How to choose

We always recommend seeing full slabs in person before committing, as natural stone varies from slab to slab. Think about how you use your kitchen, how much maintenance you're comfortable with and how the stone will work with your flooring, joinery and lighting. Edge profiles, such as a mitred apron edge, also make a big difference to the finished look.
