Moody Bar and Entertaining Spaces: How to Get the Look
A home bar or entertaining space is the perfect opportunity to create a room with real atmosphere. Clients increasingly want a space that feels like a wow moment: moody, sophisticated and a little bit dramatic.
Embrace darker colours
Deep tones such as charcoal, inky navy, forest green, oxblood and rich timber create intimacy and depth. Using colour across walls, joinery and even the ceiling makes the space feel enveloping and intentional.
Layer rich materials
Textured and reflective materials bring a bar to life. Think veined stone benchtops, fluted timber, smoked or reeded glass, bronze or brass detailing and leather or velvet upholstery. Batten detailing or a subway tile laid in an interesting pattern can add texture to a feature wall.
Lighting is everything
Moody doesn't mean dark. Concealed LED lighting in shelving, warm wall lights and a statement pendant create a warm glow, while dimmers let you adjust the mood for the occasion. Lighting glassware and bottles from behind or within joinery adds sparkle.
Make art the focal point
A large artwork on the back wall can anchor the whole space and give it personality. Choose a piece with scale and presence, and light it properly with a picture light or adjustable spotlight.
Plan the practical details
A great bar still needs to work. Plan for wine and beverage fridges, an ice maker or sink if needed, glassware storage and enough bench space for serving, all coordinated with power, plumbing and ventilation.
