Powder Room Ideas That Make a Big Impression in a Small Space

The powder room is one of the smallest rooms in the house, but it's often the one guests remember most. Because it's compact and used for short visits, it's the perfect place to be a little bolder with stone, colour, lighting and tapware.

Go bold with stone or tile

A feature stone vanity top or a full stone wall can transform a powder room. Deep greens, veined marbles and richly coloured stone all work well in a small space because you only need a modest amount of material. Feature tiles, such as fluted, textured or handmade finishes, are another way to add character without a large budget.

Make the vanity the hero

A wall-hung or floating vanity keeps the floor clear and makes the room feel larger. Consider an integrated stone basin, a curved or apron-front edge, or a vanity in a contrasting timber or painted finish. Brushed brass, gunmetal or matte black tapware adds the finishing touch.

Layer the lighting

Lighting can completely change the mood of a powder room. Wall lights either side of the mirror give flattering light, while a pendant or concealed LED strip adds atmosphere. Dimmable lighting lets the space feel bright during the day and moody in the evening.

Think about the entry and layout

Where the powder room sits matters. In family homes we often look at whether it can be accessed from a laundry or mudroom so kids coming in from the pool or garden don't track through the main living areas. Small layout decisions like this make a big difference to how the home works.
